With the mist of summer approaching, a new project to devise and a huge creative block, I looked to David Lynch for inspiration. I have always admired Lynch's surrealist style and the exploration of violence within his work. Although a fan of his films and art, I was yet to watch the cult classic Twin Peaks, a task that I had been meaning to do for quite a few years, yet never got around to doing it. With a whole week dedicated to watching Twin Peaks in it's entirety, I myself, jumped on the bandwagon and joined the cult. After dusting off my cowboy jacket and sharpening my spurs, I created this test shoot. The projected images are used to signify the horror and torment that Laura Palmer endured through her dreams leading up to her death.

A shoot to follow in the next month.

We were each given an image from an unknown source for my current brief. Mine was a photocopied collage type mess! The image lacked very little detail at first glance as the surface area was mainly black. I decided to only scan in elements of the image, in order to focus on the detail that there was. I then played around with the image by mirroring it and adding images over the top, to work towards a theme of repetition.

A simple statement from Paris – J’aime mon carré or I love my scarf. Shout it in the street, write it in lipstick on your mirror, stick it on your fridge, pin it to your chest!

Hermès believe in the idea that their silk scarf is for life and for living, as do we! In appreciation to this very idea Hermès have created a fanzine in order to document the fervour around that traditional silk square of which the Hermès ‘carré’ is the ultimate expression. British photographer Matt Irwin, Art Director Dean Langley and stylist Francesca Burns travelled to London, Paris, New York and Tokyo with 7 girls, 4 boys and 250 scarves in order to create this wonderful fanzine!

From the 18th-21st November J’aime mon carré will be at the Rochelle school of art, and 25th November at Ledbury Road, West London. Here you will learn how to style your scarves with the experts and get your style on record by one of their photographers! Definitely one not to be missed!

I recently stumbled across the work of American photographer Francesca Woodman. Her images undeniably portray a distinct style; one that I cannot get enough of. Black and white images that usually depict a naked woman/herself or destruction each with blurred effects, created by camera movement and long exposure settings. The strong dark narrative tones within each of her photographs create an eerie and distressed feel; a feeling that Woodman herself was later found to be feeling at the time. She became depressed after a broken relationship and with her work itself, which led her to sadly committed suicide in 1981 at such a young age, 22. There are only 120 images of Woodmans' that have ever been published/ exhibited. Such a waste of life and tremendous talent, I could spend all day looking at her work.

Betty Jackson SS11

That's right folks it's that time again, yep London's fashion elite have dry-cleaned their glad-rags, starved for weeks in advance and practised their all important blog-photo-faces. Now the only other thing we love as much as perversion has to be fashion, so I was obvs psyched to be a part of the Betty Jackson SS11 show. The collection, inspired by 1940's land girls, focused lots on nipped in waists and a utilitarian toughness. This was given a more youthful appeal with sporty touches, such as the aertex stilettos, wedges and drawstring waists, spotted in many looks. The collection was given bursts of femininity, with brightly coloured 70's inspired birds-of-paradise prints and fluffy ostrich feather capes and trousers. There was a definite focus on texture, satin jacquards and glossy cottons brought glamour to relatively masculine looks, while fringed cotton and feather accents accentuated dramatic silhouettes. Vibrant make-up was the look du jour with citrus nails and peacock splashes on the eyes, which brought extra punch to the otherwise muted colour palette.

Front row highlights included Jennifer Saunders looking radiant after her recent battle with cancer, artist and close friend to Betty, Tracey Emin, Miranda Richardson and the ever evident, beacon of all things fashion Hilary Alexander. Jo Wood watched the show standing, shoved in the corner of a very crowded show-space after arriving late, but remained really sweet and down-to-earth about it. Such a cutie! The only drama to unfold was when one of the models fell at the top of the catwalk, and unable to get up caught her leg in her bag and eventually limped down the catwalk carrying one shoe and wearing the other. What do you do?

I design under the name Discordo. I've done a lot of music based work including The Horrors, No Bra, These New Puritans and Kate Nash, nicely eclectic and allows me to get stuck into illustration, video work, digital design, paper, scissors, glue. I also put on club nights starting at Southends' Junkclub and more recently ECC and OFFSETCIRCLES. The later a mutation between ECC and the fantastic Offset Festival (www.offsetfestival.co.uk) which we curate a tent at each year. Any spare time is spent playing records, making music as E.Gold or co-running a little independant record label called DiscError Recordings, putting out limited vinyls by bands including Ipso Facto, Ulterior, R O M A N C E, Death In Plains.

If you wasn’t doing this what else would you be doing?

Honestly i dont know. I've worked a lot of rubbish jobs, I definitely know what i wouldn't be doing.

Id rather pay attention to the people getting it right - Dean Chalkley, Passions, Angular Records, Darren Berry, Rhys Webb, The Horrors, These New Puritans, Offset Festival too many to name.

Typography. Designers like Robert Brown-John, people that transcend their disciplines like Trevor Jackson with Output Records, Playgroup and amazing design and video work. Hard working creatives like Dean Chalkley or people who speak their mind like Christopher Hitchens.

Everyone say hi to Mascha. She's my classmate and the latest subject to have their brain picked in the name of uni assignments. She got her nips out for a concept that was delivered to my tutors and fellow class homies. What a hero.

If you think that internet dating is reserved for perverts, divorcees and lonely nerds still living at home watching Emmerdale with their mum every night, these days you're probably further from the truth than you'd realise. Internet dating is the hot thing dontcha know (as well as speed dating, traffic light dating, blind dating...you get the picture). Gone is the dorky stereotype that used to be associated with the world of cyber-loving and in it's place a hip new generation of wannabe daters, all out to get their kicks. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. You still get the odd weirdo, you also get the occasional billionaire, gorgeous, GSOH future wife/hubby. But these are few and far between, obviously. Even fewer and further between are people like Maria 'Mascha' Lapotchkina. The reason for this? Mascha's mother is hatching a plan to marry her daughter off to the man of her choice. What type of man I hear you ask. Well, having been brought up on the tale of how her mother, destined to marry an American millionaire, was left heartbroken when he died in a airplane crash, on a jet bound for Kazakstan where she was awaiting him so they could marry and live together, forever in the 'land of the free and home of the brave' (America to you and me), Ms. Lapotchkina is very certain about what kind of man her only daughter deserves. A rich one of course.

First of all though, let's start with a bit of background on Mascha. She arrived here from Russia, coming via Siberia, Kazakstan and Kaluga. A fruitful life already and that's just the first sentence. Raised in a house near Moscow with her Mother, alcoholic, womanizing Grandfather and hysterical Grandmother, Mascha was brought up economically and with no father figure to speak of, leaving her mother to do anything but rest on her laurels to make a future for herself and her daughter. And so growing up a great onus was always put on the importance of a girl (i.e. Mascha) finding herself a man to make things easier.

Mascha and her mother have a relationship that is reminiscent to that of the infamous aristocrats the Edith Bouvier Beales (of the Grey Gardens noteriety). And although they don't live in an abandoned mansion, dressing everyday in their finery whilst feasting on ice-cream and corned beef, surrounded by felines and raccoons; they very much rely on each other in a perverse kind of way. It's as though Ms. Lapotchkina wants the best for her daughter but is determined to do it in the most selfish of ways, as Mascha describes. 'It feels as though she doesn't 't have any respect for me to do this behind my back. She is trying to control my life, just like her own mother used to'.

For most, having to sum yourself up in a tiny box entitled 'About Me' in just under 150 words, all the while being witty yet informative, trying not to sound like the other 20 million people who have described how 'crazy' (like kooky, not psycho) and 'always up for a laugh' they are. Mascha's mum Anna slipped into the role of matchmaker with ease, however, and came up with a beautiful portrayal. Describing Mascha as a 'sensitive' and 'all-giving romantic', who enjoys 'theatre-going and long walks'. Perfect girl, right? Er, okay. And is this a fitting description of her beloved daughter? In short, no. Well maybe in her eyes this is what her daughter encompasses but we've both agreed (myself and Mascha) it was probably more to do with the fact that this kind of girl suits the kind of man Ms. Lapotchkina would like her daughter to meet. Anyway as a self confessed reveler in other peoples misery and a sadistical manipulator, Mascha can't be all of these things can she? Well don't get me wrong she doesn't come across as a psychopath or anything, but she certainly isn't the 'butter-wouldn't-melt' character her mother would have you believe. This girl parties at illegal raves, she dabbles in drugs (don't even ask her about the Boxing Day Acid Trip fiasco), she schemes to seduce men and leave them whimpering at her feet.

And how about the New Years resolution Mascha has made to find a girlfriend before the year is out? 'I'm sick of men' she clarifies 'they're all perverts, psycho's or megalomaniacs'. An 'interest' which until recently was carefully omitted from mother Lapotchkina. 'She's super religious' explains Mascha 'girls should only marry men in my mothers eyes and obviously a woman cannot provide for another woman as well as man can. But I mean has she even heard of Angelina Jolie?'

Although it seems for now Mascha's latest pursuit has put a stop to the search, or maybe it's just the fact that Ms. Lapotchkina realises her daughter is still young and has to get this 'fad out of her system'. So for now she has agreed to stop or at least put on hold the hunt for Mr Right (aka Mr Big Bucks). How long this will last? Who knows. I mean I hear that Internet Brides are making a comeback and are going to be big come 2011. Watch this space.

Given my (somewhat annoying) indecisive nature, I can never decide who 'my favourite' person within any given field is. Purely for the fact that it changes daily and the fact that I really do not know. But in photography terms, Josh Olins is definitely up there in the favourite stakes. His raw talent and sharp aesthetic give his editorial images an undeniable and intriguing edge, that I for one, can't get enough of. Upon opening any worth reading editorial magazine, you will most likely stumble across one of his amazing shoots or advertising campaigns, a shoot of which he would of had a heavy influence on the art direction too. The man is obviously a genius with an array of inter-changeable skills who I feel needs more recognition! Unfortunately I have waited a year for his website which states that it is 'coming soon' to actually come, however as of yet, it is still annoyingly not complete! So you will have to check out his work through other sources, which given our technological world is easy, so no excuses! go google. now!
